KN and bp to collaborate on trucked LNG project
Energy terminals developer and operator KN (Klaipėdos Nafta AB) expands its cooperation with global energy company bp. KN and bp Gas & Power Investments Limited signed a cooperation agreement on the development of a new LNG project in Latin America. KN, which has been successfully operating an LNG terminal in the Brazilian port of Açu since 2020, is invited to contribute to the development of the Açu trucked LNG station project.
The project involves the planned construction of an LNG truck loading station at the Port of Açu, allowing gas to be delivered to consumers that are not connected to the gas pipeline network in the southeast region of Brazil. This could create new demand centres and support industrial customers’ decarbonisation agendas.
Under the cooperation agreement, bp and KN will collaborate by evaluating the project's commercial viability, as well as executing various development phase tasks with a view to a planned final investment decision at the end of 2023.
"The competences accumulated in Klaipėda in the development of the LNG reloading station and the entire LNG value chain, as well as the operational experience gained in the Port of Açu, will be useful for the partner in the development of the trucked LNG station project and will contribute to the successful implementation of it. We appreciate the confidence shown by bp in our competences, as the opportunity to grow our operations in Açu Port. Furthermore, the cooperation with the major energy company in the development of this project is in line with the objectives of the new KN strategy 2050, which include expanding the LNG business abroad and securing new investment opportunities by 2030,” says Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN.
"bp is pleased to cooperate with KN in development of the Açu trucked LNG project, accelerating the growth of the gas market in Brazil. KN will bring valuable complementary skills to the partnership and strengthen the project with their experience in Europe and Brazil," says Silvia Bisogni, bp Vice President Brazil Growth
KN has achieved successful integration of the LNG terminal and the LNG reloading station in Klaipėda and since 2017 has been providing its customers with LNG reloading, LNG truck loading and bunkering services for ships using LNG as fuel.
In addition to developing the LNG value chain in the Baltic region, KN has been appointed as the operator of the LNG import terminal in the port of Açu from 2020, which started commercial operations in 2021. In the Brazilian port of Açu, Gas Natural Acu (GNA), a company in which bp is a one of the shareholders, is implementing the largest natural gas power plant project in Latin America. It includes two natural gas-fired power plants and an LNG import terminal supplied by bp.
To date, KN has contributed to more than ten different LNG projects around the world. Currently KN operates LNG terminals in Lithuania, Brazil and provides commercial operation services for two floating LNG terminals in Germany.

KN became commercial operator of another LNG terminal in Germany
The energy terminal operator KN (AB Klaipėdos nafta) continues its successful participation in numerous international LNG projects. The company is starting its commercial operation of the Elbehafen LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel, northern Germany. This marks KN's second involvement in a German LNG terminal, following its role as the commercial operator of the Wilhelmshaven LNG terminal on the North Sea coast since autumn of last year.
The Elbehafen LNG terminal, situated in the port city of Brunsbüttel at the Elbe River's mouth, was developed by Elbehafen LNG GmbH —a subsidiary of the German energy group RWE, on behalf of the German Government.
According to the signed contract, commercial terminal management services include managing logistics operations, gas dispatching operations, gas accounting and reporting, and other terminal operational services adapted to the customer’s needs.
The Elbehafen LNG terminal is based on the floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) technology. The terminal receives gas from LNG carriers via the FSRU Höegh Gannet, which was built in 2018 and has a storage capacity of 170,000 cubic meters. After expansion of the natural gas grid network the terminal will have a designed annual capacity of 7.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
The Elbehafen LNG terminal is the third LNG terminal built in Germany over the last year, following the country's rush to develop new LNG terminals in the aftermath of Russia's war in Ukraine to avoid an energy deficit.
Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN, points out that yet another successful bid for the commercial operation of the German LNG terminal confirms that the decision taken more than five years ago to focus on the development of the LNG business on international markets was the right one.
“The growth of LNG terminal construction projects since the start of the Russian war in Ukraine has created an additional market for our services. However, we have been planning an ambitious expansion in the global LNG market long before the war. To date, we have contributed to more than 10 different LNG projects around the world. We are delighted to be able to add another new commercial operation contract in Germany to our solid portfolio of international projects”, says the CEO of KN.
Šilenskis notes that KN’s new long-term strategy for 2023–2050, approved in mid-June, also focuses on the development of the international LNG business. Leveraging their knowledge and expertise, the company is poised to extend LNG terminal development activities in growing markets and to actively seek additional new LNG projects in which KN would be selected as a consultant, an operator and, if successful, even a shareholder or investor.
KN currently operates three liquid energy product terminals in Lithuania and is the operator of LNG terminals in Lithuania and Brazil. The company also provides commercial operation services for two floating LNG terminals in Germany.
