FIRST OIL SHIPMENT FROM THE USA IN HISTORY HAS REACHED KN
2020-06-06
On the evening of June 5, the tanker NS Captain moored at the quay of Klaipėda Oil Terminal managed by KN (AB Klaipėdos nafta), bringing 77,000 tons of crude oil cargo from the USA which is to be used by Belarusian oil refineries.
The tanker NS Captain arrived in Klaipėda from the port of Beaumont (Texas, USA). This is the eighth oil tanker to arrive this year. The cargo will be transferred to railway tanks and transported to Belarus.
A tanker with oil destined for Belarus had previously arrived in Klaipėda port in mid-May. A cargo of 87,000 tons of oil then came from Saudi Arabia. Earlier this year, KN handled Norwegian and Russian oil delivered by tankers, which was transported by rail to Belarus.
"Such events deserve a separate entry in the pages of energy history. The first cargo of oil from the USA perfectly illustrates that KN’s business strategy motto – connecting energy markets – is not just a sound declaration on paper, but an example of our real activities. We are glad that we can create benefits in this way for both our company and our customers,” says Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN.
KN Klaipėda Oil Terminal ranks the second among the 13 main terminals, in terms of cargo handling in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and it occupies about 24 percent of the market. In order to maintain and increase its competitive advantages, KN is constantly investing in the development of the Klaipėda Oil Terminal and expanding the range of handled products. With the existing infrastructure, KN can handle 3-4 million tonnes of crude oil per year, while continuing to secure operational flows from other customers. The near-future investment perspective includes a railway trestle bridge and a multifunctional continuous quay. After the completion of its reconstruction, KN will be able to receive and load three tankers at the Klaipėda Oil Terminal at the same time. In comparison, up until now it could only handle two tankers.
