KN Klaipėda Liquid Energy Terminal sees record petrol throughput

The Klaipėda Liquid Energy Terminal, operated by the international energy terminal operator AB Klaipėdos nafta (KN), achieved a remarkable milestone over the weekend. A record-breaking 90,000 tonnes of petrol were loaded onto the tanker SKS DARENT, marking the largest petrol batch handled to date.
This is the largest batch of petrol handled to date, destined for one of the company's main customers AB ORLEN Lietuva. Petrol export cargoes for this customer typically amounted to around 40,000 tonnes. The smallest batch loaded this year was just over 3,000 tonnes.
The record batch of 90,000 tonnes of petrol was loaded onto an Bahamas-flagged tanker of 250 m length and 120,000 t capacity, a fairly standard visitor to the KN Klaipėda Liquid Energy Products Terminal.
‚A risk mitigating resource allocation strategy, cost optimization, ongoing expansion of customer portfolio and search for new export destinations as well as discovery of new markets make it necessary to strive for the maximum flexibility in the logistics chain, as well to the seaborne and inlands - on wheels and rails’, said Radosław Misztalewski, General Director of AB ORLEN Lietuva, ‘Loading of this vessel shows our ability to adapt to the ever-changing market situation, creating the greatest possible benefit for the Company. I’m glad and I do appreciate that our Partners understand needs of key clients and challenges of current market adjusting their activities that allow effective and satisfying business results for both“.
Darius Šilenskis, Chief Executive Officer of KN, points out that the accumulation of more than half of the usual batch of petrol for export perfectly illustrates KN's flexibility, adaptability and responsiveness to the needs of the market and its customers.
This is also the reason for the stable cargo throughput of the Klaipėda Liquid Energy Products Terminal, which in the first 9 months of 2023 remained almost the same as in the same period of 2022 – around 3 million tonnes.
"Our stable performance is the result of our past actions to adapt to changes in the market, our focus on operational efficiency and our ability to react to changes in customer needs. The high demand for liquid fuels in the world and in Europe and the high utilisation rate of oil refineries also have a positive impact," says Šilenskis.
According to him, another reason why KN has been able to maintain its operating volumes at a similar level as in 2022, while other competing terminals in the Baltic States have seen a decline in their cargo volumes, is its successfully diversified portfolio of activities.
"We have made a significant breakthrough at the Klaipėda Liquid Energy Products Terminal in the last couple of years. From 8 types of petroleum products at the beginning of 2021, today we are loading 14 different
petroleum and petrochemical products, including several types of biofuels (FAME, ethanol, biodiesel), together with bitumen, through the KN infrastructure in Klaipėda. We also generate additional income by successfully leasing oil storage capacity to customers," states the CEO of KN.
KN is an international energy terminal operator responsible for ensuring safe and reliable flows of liquid energy, loading of chemicals and raw materials for Baltic consumers, while also using the company’s knowledge and skills to assist clients around the world in developing sustainable energy infrastructure projects. The company currently operates three terminals for liquid energy products in Klaipėda, Subačius, and Marijampolė, and is also the operator of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Lithuania and Brazil. KN also provides commercial operation services for two of Germany's three floating LNG terminals. To date, the company has contributed to more than 10 different LNG projects around the world.
